Billionaires vs. Grassroots movements

What do YOU think about "Billionaires Saving the Planet?"

What are the opportunity costs to the rest of the world in order for someone to amass billions of dollars in wealth? What were the social and environmental impacts of their rise to wealth?

The global economy is much like a pie. Each person that has a bigger slice means there is someone with less (e.g. the world's richest 1% own 40% of the worlds assets and the richest 10% own 85% of the world total). So for most of these people, taking care of the planet is like taking care of their yards...BECAUSE THEY DO OWN IT!

It's great that a few billionaires have decided to help the environment. Personally, I am more excited about the grassroots efforts out there where a lot of people are working hard to each do a little bit. Each one of us must face the question "What impact are MY contributions having?"

Much like taking care of our own physical health - it can at times be cumbersome and inconvenient to do what's right. Yes, Ben N Jerry's is yummier than steamed veggies. However, there is power in restraint and discipline and this is what we require to change the direction of our planet.

So next time you open that freezer with the ice cream at the supermarket, remember "nothing ever tastes as good as thin feels!"
